Our History

Our story begins in 1964 with our father and founder, the one and only Don Shafer. It all started when our mom, Marie Shafer, recognized that Dad was letting his artistic talents go to waste. She encouraged him to partner up with a friend and start a decal business from scratch.

The Shafer Family circa 1965 (Don, Regina, Becky, Cynthia, and Marie)

Our first year was spent in a one-room building growing the business from the ground up. Boat names and numbers were some of the first decals we ever made. Dad would enlist the family to be part of the assembly line, which is how we kids learned our alphabet and how to count.

It was a struggle until the business became established about three years later. Dad would take us kids with him on trips around the Midwest to make contacts and meet face-to-face with prospective customers. Back then, the sales process was a personal experience, and Dad liked to involve us kids by turning it into a bonding experience, spending quality time with us after meetings.

Our first big break was when we were approached by Charlie Mancuso, then the City Auditorium Manager. He asked us to make a 4-foot gym floor decal for the NBA’s Cincinnati Royals who would be playing some of their games in Omaha. We weren’t equipped to do it, but Charlie wouldn’t take no for an answer, so we did it. After that, the NBA requests came pouring in. We made decals for many of the teams and the league, a tradition that continues to this day.

Dad’s dedication to customer service and his perseverance through tough situations is what makes us the great company we are today. Always the one to find the humor in challenging situations, he was known for his admirable and unparalleled work ethic. If we weren’t equipped to handle a big job that came in, saying “no” wasn’t an option; we’d always find a way to get the job done. From day one, there has never been a project too big or too small for us to take on, and that whole-hearted dedication to our work came from Dad. We’re more than proud to be carrying on his legacy.

Fun Fact

We are an artistic bunch! In addition to our decals business, we always had creative projects the side. One was making personalized, decorative plates that represented each member of a family using dinner plates for adults and dessert plates for kids. Dad would make decals for the faces, and Mom would add a personal touch by decorating them. We ended up selling about 1,000 of these plates a year as extra income!
